Bachelor of Arts in Social Work

College of Health & Social Sciences

The School of Social Work responds to the needs and aspirations of various at-risk populations in the San Francisco Bay Area and similar urban communities. The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) program seeks to educate undergraduate students for generalist social work practice in a variety of social-service settings, and teach students to serve as change agents with urban, oppressed populations, while enabling members of these populations to act on their own behalf. Our graduates provide direct services to people in need and, as administrators and organizers of social service agencies, make services more accessible and responsive to the communities they serve.

There are 42 required units for the major. Students in their Senior year are required to complete 450 hours of field education.

Social Work Advocates for Visions of Empowerment (SWAVE) is the student organization of BASW majors. BASW students have the opportunity for semester-long study abroad exchange programs with SF State’s bilateral international partners and with the California State University International Programs (CSU-IP). The BASW program also offers a blended BASW-MA Gerontology track as part of the SF State Scholars Program for students interested in gerontological social work.
